Aldi may have just lost its cheapest supermarket crown to its biggest competitor but on the wine front, they are still knocking it out of the park. here are eight of my top picks from the most recent round of tastings:
FIZZ
Contevado Cava Brut NV, 11%, £5.75
I’ve always been a fan of classic Cava as it is such excellent value for a complex, traditional method fizz. This one is packed with notes of toasty, pear, pineapple and lemon sherbet. Refreshing yet food friendly too.
Specially Selected Ribolla Gialla NV, 11%, £6.99
This lesser known Italian grape hails from Friuli in northern Italy and it offers a fizz that’s got a bit more to it than most Prosecco s in its price range. Think aromatic lemon blossom notes with baked apple and a slick of salt. The packaging is wonderful too. A real point of difference.
WHITE
Specially Selected Barossa Chardonnay, 13%, £6.49
Fans of big, bold, buttery Chardonnay with love this unapologetically opulent style. There’s a savoury peanut toastingess to it as well as a squeeze of something citrussy so while it’s rich and flavoursome, it doeasn;t feel sickly and overblown. A great choice for roast or grilled chicken and halloumi.
Specially Selected Costières de Nimes Blanc, 12.5% £7.99
A beautiful blend of plush, white Grenache, apple-like Vermentino, lime blossom-scented Roussanne, waxy Marsanne, peachy Viognier and perky Bourbelenc. The result is a full-bodied, texture white with some much going flavour-wise. Bold and classy.
ROSE
Specially Selected Austrian Zweigelt Rosé, 11.5%, £6.99
Here’s something a little different from the pale pink Provençal standard. Zweigelt is an Austrian grape that usually makes crunchy, lighter styled red wine but here, it has produced a slightly leafy, mineral pink with some ripe raspberry vibes. Stunning!
Unearthed Bulgarian Pinot Noir Rosé, 12%, £8.99
Another different style of rosé to consider is this beautiful little Bulgarian number. Made with Pinot Noir, it’s clean and refreshing with some gorgeous ripe, red fruit notes. Think strawberries and cream with added zip.
RED
Buenas Vides Organic Argentinian Malbec, 13.5%, £7.99
This very well-priced Malbec is fast becoming a cult classic as Aldi - and for good reason: It’s velvety smooth with notes of violet and ripe blueberry. There’s a touch of dark chocolate about it and a lean acidity that keeps it feeling fresh and super sophisticated. It;s made with organic grapes too. Bonus!
Kooliburra Coonawarra Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon, 14.5%, £6.69
This label may bear an uncanny resemblance to Penfolds and it’s clearly aiming for an equally juicy style. Thick ripe blackberry and blackcurrant spice with a hefty dose of Eucalyptus. It’s Classic Coonawarra Cabernet and truly excellent value for money.
